Track and Field for Adults
Dr. Schrader received a championship ring for his participation in the hammer throw and discus competition at the NCAA National Championship while attending the University of California at Irvine in 1976. He was also an All-American Hammer Thrower in 1977. He has competed in four NCAA Championships and four AAU Championships.
Even with such a busy and demanding schedule, Dr. Schrader regularly competes in NASA events. He has also won medals while competing in the "Over Forty" Masters Division of the National Track & Field Association. In 2003, Dr. Schrader placed sixth in the world while attending "The World Championship Track & Field Competition" in Puerto Rico. The following year, he came back to hold the 2004 National title.
"I never thought I'd be interested in doing this again, especially competing at my age..." Schrader said. "But, when you go to the gym and lift weights, it's nice to have something to apply that to. When I attend these events, I have watched men and women in their eighties, nineties, and even up to a hundred years old compete with the same vigor and excitement as a high school student. It is nice to see older people getting interested in competing, and the competition really heats up with the return of the Olympians to the scene. Most of the people have their careers in order and have children that are grown and out of the home. Particularly inspiring are those in the 90-100 year category, participating in the hurdles, throwing, and the pole vault. Women and men of all ages participate in all track and field events. This shows that older folks are able to become active again in the activities that they once loved and enjoyed. They include swimming, water aerobics, golf, walking, and running."
